Simply put, it is the act of raising your child or children in such a manner as to function normal in society. How plain and boring is that for a definition?
When my daughter was born six years ago (feels like she has always been here, like life didn’t exist before her) I would joke with family and friends that I was going to use a new technique to raise her. I called it parenting.
Alright if you are taking offense to that then it is obvious it is not meant for you… or is it.
What I meant by that little joke was that I was going to be there for my child and actively participate in all aspects of her upbringing.
Too many times, do I see and hear of parents using technology to do the job they are supposed to be doing. Don’t get me wrong, there are lots of things in today’s society that I use to improve my daughter’s lifestyle. The issue to me is that it should not replace you as a parent or temporarily relieve you of your duties as such.
One of my biggest pet peeves is the TV. Not just at home, but in the car as well. Why do parents fear and dread road tripping (whether it’s to the store or the next state over) and interacting with their kids?
So, take a look at how you are as a parent. Your first thought will be correct. If you are a good parent you will know it. If you are not, then what are you going to do about it?
As I grow this blog, I will share with you my experiences, insights and opinions about what it means and what it takes to be a parent, especially a dad.
Please tell me in your own words what you think it means to be a dad.
